I'll sayโฆ about 3 more chapters? It's getting to be a chore to read this.
I've seen the whole โit hits a rough patch and then gets betterโ comments, but do we know when that is? Who has information on that, if anyone?
I don't want Hen to jump forward to the good stuff, in case there's necessary info, butโฆ I'm also not really feeling this one like i used to.
Unrelated, but if yall want to give a short and ongoing story a try, I have been uploading my own โEndless Growth" on RoyalRoad. Horror and psychological stuff, if you all want to give it a shot and give any input.
Bro I'm right there with you. At this point what Blue said is the only thing keeping me in this. I'm getting ready to drop as soon as my sub is up. Blue I need you to tell me this gets better. Did the Koreans say it turns around at some point? If I stop, this will go down as the biggest disappointment in light novel history. Please tell me it gets better!
I think my view might be a bit different from yours, but to me itโs already better. I think we can all agree that doll-gate was a real let down, but I find the current state as a positive development of the story.Personally, I divide the work into 5 acts thus far. Act 1 was from the start to Dwalki's sacrifice, which followed Bjorn as he tried to survive in this world and find its better to survive with comrades. Act 2 was from there up to the fragments of records/time travel which had Bjorn rise to fame and prominence, finding comfort in this world. Act 3 was up to some point in the basement (havenโt settled on an end point yet), which held world/lore building and Bjorn resolving to stick it to the man (royals). Act 4, I hold from then until the Witch returned him to earth, a period which delved into a bit of political drama (and obv doll-gate). I think the political drama may have been less interesting to some, and without the round table and the labyrinth explorations, along with bjorn's long term real estate endeavor, the lack of familiar elements might be off putting, but I think most of it is just a different tone/focus. Act 5, seems to be a bit different as well, as thus far it seems to resolve around the themes of trust and war. The comparisons b/w Bjorn and BaekHo seem to queue them up for a rumble. The foreshadowing of the Noark invasion seems to be a given. The brief POV change showed us the clan readying for a rescue, mobilizing without requiring Bjorn's command. Plus we have a Gavis appearance, and that always yields more insight and yet further questions. All in all, I only see evidence of development, but whether you agree or decide whether to continue reading is up to you, my friend.
Honestly, while doll was a strange bit, it was only about 3 or 4 chapters in total. Cringe-worthy but overall I could ignore it all in favor of the political machinations going on. With this, it's justโฆ A different story. Bjorn doesn't feel like Bjorn, in a sense. Feels like the author is trying to show him to be better than Baek-Ho, but it's not genuine at all. We already know that Bjorn doesn't trust or confide in his companions, but it's written as if he does. Does he believe they'll fight for him? Yes, for the most part (barring his hesitance regarding Misha), but that's more of a mechanical understanding of cohesion in a dungeon. Bjorn's entirely capable of and willing to torture, just like Baek. Even mentions wanting to have someone use the nerve magic, the next time he needs it (implying he plans to torture again, down the line). I wouldn't put it past him to torture any of his companions, if he felt they had truly betrayed him and weren't giving up info (as seen with how he cut Misha off with psychological abuse of his own variety).Yes, Baek is โworseโ than Bjorn, but it's written as if Bjorn isn't a bad guy in his own right. The protagonist, yes, but still very much a bad dude when you look at him objectively and with internal monologue taken into account. Only externally, without internal input, does Bjorn look like a hero or good guy – all of his actions are self-serving or accidentally beneficial to others. He even goes out of his way to keep people in that delusion, and it's repeatedly been shown that people who realize how twisted Bjorn is, are disgusted by it.
Youโre not wrong, it's true, heโs always been self-serving. Itโs part of the realism of his character. I think what has changed is not so much him, but his motivations, convictions, and his circle of self. He has more to protect now than just his own life and interests, and less fear of his companions leaving him. However, I do think weโve seen him get a bit gassed with his power, status, and accomplishments (imho), and to me, this recent arc is a humbling one for him, where the comparison b/w him and Baek Ho is not really to highlight how better Bjorn is, but to warn Bjorn how close he could have gotten to being like Baek Ho. Mind you, he still comes off judgy Regarding torturing his companions, I actually donโt see that happening, at least not with his core group. He hasnโt lost his sentimentality, and would still care for them, as long as his life (or others he cares about) arenโt in danger. I find even with the Misha interrogation, he was harsh and cold, but still rather gentle compared to other interrogations. Mind you, if he hadnโt met his crew, or had been betrayed by them early on, I think things would have been very different
I know, that was such a bad call. Author didn't even replace it with anything. It was one of the only ways to get some insight from other characters. Especially ones from Noark. Author is on a roll of bad calls. I'm kind of over this novel.
I just took a look and if I'm already at my limit reading this with the story the way it is properly translated by hen, then if I read the novelight version I'll just kill myself. A big reason to read here is because of the comments too.
I've read from a bunch of different places before I found Hen's translations (furtuneeternal, vadomir, namu, naver, etc) and tbh, this is the best I've seen here. Most others really muck up the translations or are barely better than machine translations. Novelight is the same, at least for stgb. Not the worst, but not near the quality here. Hen may sometimes take longer, but I find the effort makes the difference.Plus, I agree with Chris, the comments make the community, and itโs not the same without yaโll ๐
@Restless @Blue @Chris I just wish Hen was a little more transparent with translations. He was cracking out multiple chapters a day for both series and now barely gets one a day despite having just this.In regards to this STGB light novel, I actually still enjoy it, in spite of all its filler chapters. Bjorn had fallen into his judgy but unfazed personality. No one of any real importance has died in a while which has stagnated his character growth. And it doesnโt help that they donโt really receive any heavy setbacks or punishments like losing a essence or losing an arm permanently making them a shield or mace only tank.Even this current arc has been nothing but beneficial to him with gathering parts/equipment himself and his team. Beak ho has lost a teammate and likely will have a bad confrontation with Gavis considering this was him pulling them by their noses the whole way.
This is the main problem with the story. Thereโs no danger anymore. The suspense is totally gone because we all know Bjorn and co are protected by plot armor. This is death to good writing. When terrible choices don't have devastating consequences, the suspension of disbelief takes over. At this point, Bjornโs comrades only exist as revenge motivation for whatever character the author needs to make the antagonist. Either Baekho or Gavis will at least one of them to pull at the heart strings (my money is on Aynar.) That means they're all safe until the author sends it necessary to conjure up drama. This is pinnacle, dog-shit writing. For a while now, everytime something โbadโ happens, it's actually good because they get some sort of secret weapon or essence. The world itself is bending over backwards just for Bjorn and his team.
So they all are going to become friends dammitโฆ is that or everyone but baekho and bjorn (and maybe ruinzenes) dies. Everyone in the party would know by now that the rest are evil spirits as wellโฆ So gms death is guaranteedโฆ

Wasnโt the wolf promised to be sent back? pretty sure that is void now.
Yeah but it was obviously Gavis, so why the cliche reveal? Who was honestly surprised it was him at this point? Author be slacking man.
This chapter was a short read. Hen has been slowing down more despite having only this series to translate. Hope he isnโt getting burn out.
